The Sri Lankan rupee has recorded a 0.1 percent appreciation against the US dollar during the first nine days of the year, according to data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
The Central Bank noted that this modest gain marks a positive shift compared to the currency’s performance last year. In contrast, the rupee depreciated by 5.5 percent against the US dollar over the course of the previous year.
According to the weekly economic data report issued by the Central Bank, market conditions for Treasury bills and bonds also remained broadly stable during the past week, reflecting steady sentiment in the domestic financial market.
Economists note that while the early appreciation is marginal, it signals relative stability in the foreign exchange market at the start of the year, with attention now focused on external inflows, fiscal discipline, and global economic trends that could influence currency movements in the months ahead.
